I have a '93 Sidekick JX and the 4-wheel drive is going out. When it started I would hear an intermittent sound coming from up front that sounded like a power steering pump when it's low on fluid. It only happened when I was putting power to the front wheels in 4WD. When the clutch was in or i applied the brakes, the noise stopped. I avoided using the 4WD unless it was necessary. The last time I used it, there was a severe grinding sound that only stopped several hundred yards after disengaging the 4WD. Someone has suggested that I need to replace my CV joints. Can anyone here confirm that or give another suggestion? I live in northern Alaska, and I'd like to avoid the troubleshooting time I spend under the car in forty-below. Thanks.
