I've had my sidekick for about a year and a half now. It's a 93, 4 door hard top with a 16 valve engine. Front wheel drive. Lately, within the past week, when I bring the car to a complete stop, I get this grinding noise. I think it might be the brake pads, but I never heard the squealing that you would normally get with bad pads. Are my wheel bearings going out? or did my pads just get so bad that they passed gthe squealing part? This has me worried, as I drive long (300+ miles) distances sometimes. I need to know what part I should be buying before I have my mechanic charge 30 bucks to tell me what the problem is. Any suggestions?

Buddy- My first bit of advice is get a different mechanic! Wheel bearing usually grind most of the time while moving and sometimes hum at highway speeds. sometimes you can make them start and stop making noise by weaving back and forth slightly at speed. I would say brake pads is probably the offending part, but if they are grinding then you probably need rotors aswell at 20 bucks each I didn't have mine turned( to flatten out the grooves from the grinding) I just replaced them. I just did this to my 90 tracker last weekend. Pads and rotors were 57 bucks. (not lifetime warranty) Car Quest was the brand of parts. I also had a caliper that was set up from setting for 2 years and that was another 35 buck plus core charge. I would guess an honest mechanic would charge less that 200 for brakes and rotors. Hope I could help- let me know how it turns out. - mehlen

Yea, I'm thinking new pads too. In fact mine is doing the same thing. I pulled the tire off and seen that is it just starting to cut a small groove in the rooter. So it is on my asap list of things to do. Plus the front on my 92 always seems to go through pads about every 3 years or so. This time it was long so not to bad.
