Has anyone out there got experience tieing a wood gunwhaled canoe (they slide), or plastic kayaks to the factory racks on a hardtop 2002 Tracker, such as how to keep the racks from getting wrecked, how to pad them? Ideas such as whether there is much sideslip in wind, whether the rack will come loose, you know, the kind of stuff you only learn with actual experience in using the thing in this way. Expert rock-puncher wants your experience. Tanks in advance.

Good question!
The only experience I can share here is with a Peterborough that my brother refurbished. I strap it on top of my (rackless) Sidekick, with:
- 4 foams to prevent the canoe from touching the truck's roof ("C" shaped foams, I got them at a store called Mountain Equipment Coop here in Ottawa) - Tie-downs front and rear, forming a V from the tip of the canoe to each sides below the bumper - Straps going over the middle of the canoe from side to side to help hold it there.
Hope it helps...
Lou
