I went to the USHRA Monster Jam event at the Sky Dome in Toronto last week. Pretty good show, probably the biggest they've had. Eight trucks actually showed up this time.
The down side though is how it's so much like a wrestling event. Clearly rigged so that Grave Digger would win. Every truck that would race grave digger would wait on the line about 2 seconds after the green light. What was really sad in the finals watching the big "Black Stallion" Ford throw the race to grave digger. It was close until the end when Black Stallion practically coasts across the last set of cars.
Also most interesting is that they had the "Street Warriors" racing. Longer time fans might better know them as Pro Arena Trucks. There was a Ford Taurus entered in the lot. Aside from "heavy suspension modification" the car was practically stock, it was even the stock ride height. This junk yard dog was damn quick and would have won the whole competition if it wasn't disqualified for being a Ford and despite the bottoming out over every jump. The rules say the race isn't over until they come to a complete stop after crossing the line. The Taurus managed to skid and just BARELY touch one of the flags as it came to a stop. Resulted in disqualification and loosing in the semi-finals. In actual fact it showed a black Chevy S-10 whos boss.
The Sedcond round was a old 1.6 Suzuki against a new Suzuki Vitara. Obviously the Vitara won, but for some reason the Sidekick went to the next round. The Vitara only won by 1 second, they didnt explain why it didnt go to the next round. I assume because if the Vitara did go to the next round it would have bet the Chevy truck. When they put a 80hp Suzuki against a Chevy truck of course Chevy is gonna win.
The final round pitted the black S-10 against a tiny 1.6L Suzuki Sidekick which looked like a toy compared to the other entries. Unfortunately 80hp wasn't enough to do the job and the chevy truck took it. It was amazing how close it was though. Also funny to see the junkyard suzuki blow the engine just as it crossed the finish line.
So both competitions were fixed so a chevy has to win. Still a fun show to watch and worth the $33.ca
They had a monster truck freestyle at the end too which was a hoot. Grave digger was able to give it all and intentionally flip the truck at the end. Not a big deal when the team has a total of 8 trucks at their disposal. Its a shame for the single truck teams that can't afford to intentionally destroy their trucks and have to be careful out there.
