Mine tranny grinds into 2nd when cold. Its a 90 2dr soft kick.
80w90 isnt cutting it. What are you guys doing in the extreme cold? What should I use? I was thinking for OTC, mobil1 75w90 synth because it has the MT-1 spec.
Or is there something else that would work?

Yup. In a cold winter, I only reccommend synthetics; the gears don't like spinning in thick goo. world of difference.

ditto as all to odinrage. If that doesn't solve your problem, try the following:
1. check for clutch spin down time, put vehicle in first gear, then press in clutch, count to 4, then put in reverse, if it grinds, maybe clutch is getting a bit worn.
2. adjust cluch cable freeplay
3. if that doesn't solve the problem, possibly second syncro gear is worn, i had an old volkswagon golf that had the same symptoms. Of course, opinion from mechanic should be seeked.
hope this helps,
94box.

I went to my mecanik this morning to change the tranny oil. Only synthec he had was 75w-90 ful synthec Quakerstate. But it stated GL5 on it son I didnt want it in my tranny but after a few calls at other mecaniks and a Suzuki dealer, we discovered they dont produce 75w-90 in GL4 anymore, and the Suzuki dealer uses GL5 instead. So I went that way. Hopefully nothing bad comes outta this.

I've only used gl5 in all my gears (unavailability of GL4 at my local parts place, same reason) and things are fine... don't loose sleep over this.

Yall have got it pegged, I was leaning toward the syncro ... Didn't even think of the clutch not releasing (way to go, 94box)
Synthetic in the trans and transfer case. I wonder why it wouldn't help gas economy, then, yea, it should. Thanks, guys.

Hello All:
Ran into the same dilemma, owners manual says gl-4 in the manual tranny and transfer case, i also use the quaker state brand, a quick call to a couple of suzuki dealerships verified that they only use gl-5. Also I called mobil oil and talked to an engineer, the difference between gl-4 and gl-5 is that the former do not attack the bronze alloys in the component, if dealer uses the gl-5 then the suzuki transfer case must not contain any bronze components cause if they did, we would know about it in a hurry!
Not to worry 3wheeler.

I have a '93 5-spd and a long time ago it had a hard-shifting problem in cold weather so I put in Redline MTL (full synthetic) ... it made a HUGE difference, you would swear it was a different tranny. next time I am going to try the Redline MT-90 because that one is really the correct weight to use but it should have the same benefit. MT-90 can also be used in the transfer case.
Redline 75W90 synthetic gear oil can be used in the diffs. and for an AT, their synthetic D4 ATF which is Dexron II/III/IV certified.
The only bad thing is you won't find them in stores, but it's easy enough to order online.

Nice Job, 94box, and gsapien,
Good Reading, Good Information, and Good to find out about a product that everyone can get on the internet.
Wednesday, I plan to replace a 5-speed trans output shaft. I'll have a chance to see all 6 syncronizers and wonder if they are bronze alloy.

I was thinking that the Front diff and the Transfer case both hold just a little bit of oil each . The trans probably does hold a lot though.

As for Redline, I was thinking about it but its so darn expensive. $7-8 per quart, well worth it for full synthetic fluids I think (and cheaper than some of the GM ones). I buy it from www.ogracing.com, and it's also available from Summit Racing and various other online stores.

Redline Oils
But how are they on shipping . Do they try to sell a case (12) for better shipping rate?
